Tiny Shark Has A Superpower: Its Belly Glows

By Cooper

The smalleye pygmy shark is one of the world's tiniest sharks, reaching no longer than 8.7 inches (22 centimeters).

I think that it is interesting that there are very big sharks, but there are also very small sharks, yet non-scientist people mainly focus on the big sharks. I think that people think that big sharks seem more dangerous, scary, and interesting than little sharks. I think that people have created a stereotypical image of all sharks being very big and vicious, when some sharks, like the smalleye pygmy shark, are quite small. I think that it is very interesting that the smalleye pygmy shark has organs that can glow. I wonder why luminescence in sharks is not very common anymore. I guess that it is not as important for sharks to glow anymore because they found different means of camouflage, so when sharks evolved, they slowly stopped glowing.

I never knew that there were sharks this small. Bioluminescence is a very interesting topic to research. These sharks, even though they are behind in the evolutionary chain, have found a very good way of not getting eaten.

This is pretty cool because I didn't think sharks could be so small. I would like to know if these sharks are in the same family as the bioluminescent creatures that live far down in the ocean.

That is really cool that there is a 22 centimeter shark! When I think of sharks I think of big scary creatures but now I think of them much differently. It is cool how the sharks can use their glow to hide from predators and so they are not eaten. They live really far in the ocean so it probably be hard to find them.

I thought this was a very good subject because I thought it was very interesting a weird to have one of the smallest sharks in the world have a bely that glows. I think this is the only species of animal that has a belly characteristic like this.
