I find the Titanic a very interesting story. I am very interested in it so I did my poem for English on it. Did you know that days before the departure people sold their tickets because they thought that the Titanic was too heavy and would sink? I guess the less educated go lucky. It was also questioned that the captain was trying to sink the ship. Why would he go full speed into an ice field? Why would he try to move on with the hull brutally damaged. Why would he set sail with such a measly supply of life boats? The story just doesn't add up.

I feel like the designer of the titanic was very very stupid. He thought that the design of the ship was more important than one passenger's safety. He thought it looked ugly when there where more life boats. So many people could have been saved if he hadn't ben so stupid. Also, one thing the crew did is that they closed the gates on the lower decks to the third class. They were treated like dirt and they were looked upon as less than. When the ship was sinking only the woman and children were only allowed to go on the life boats and the crew was going to go down with the ship but, the designer decided to bribe one of the ship workers who were getting people on boats to let him go on. And He said that it was his worst mistake and that he felt regret for as long as he lived.

I agree with Chloe in that the captain might have been trying to sink the ship, I mean the story seems right. Anyway, I thought that was very interesting. Like Julia said, the captain was not thinking straight when he put the looks of the ship over the actual safety of the passengers.

The people on the Titanic said that it was the boat of dreams and that it was unsinkable. They were definitely wrong. It sort of seams that they were so cocky that the boat sank as a sign of karma. What is very sad is that there was a lot of bribing going on in that ship... What the people didn't know was that they were going to die and that all that money where to be lost.

I very much disagree with Cami and Chloe when they said it was the captain that wanted to sink the ship. He left to go to sleep and that is when one of the other ship mates stepped in... Another fact is that they lost their night seeing binoculars so they could barely see the iceberg coming ahead. And I still ask WHY? Why would the captain want to sink the ship in the first place. He had to go down with the ship anyways. At least he chose to unlike as I said before the designer. Also, Cami, it wasn't the captain who was stupid it was the designer.

I thought I knew a lot about the Titanic, but I was wrong! I learned so much from this article! I agree with Julia that the ship's captain (Captain Smith) did not try to deliberately sink the ship. Also, at home I have many books on the Titanic and have watched the movie. I think it was very interesting that the Titanic's watertight compartment could spill the water into the others. Also, the Titanic was only meant to float when 4 compartments were flooded, in the Titanic 5 were originally flooded. Also, British regulation was way too loose at that time. They should have required more lifeboats. So in a way it is the British government's fault. I also read that it was a calm night, so they couldn't sea the ocean crash on the iceberg. I believe that the ship was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I don't know much about the titanic and I don't know if the captain made it sink or not. I think that it wasn't smart of them to have life boats that only held 1/3 of the amount of people on the ship. They very well knew that the majority of the people on the ship would die if the ship sank. I also think that they didn't really consider very well the safety on the ship and they considered the look of the ship much more. They didn't really even consider the fact that it might sink so when it did they were not very prepared.

I agree with Chloe that the captain might have tried to sink the ship. Even if it was not the head captain, anyone who steps in for that huge roll should be able to safely maneuver the ship. I mean, what is the possibility that the captain would drive the ship into a giant ice burg? Captains have to be incredibly well trained so this seems like a likely possibility. Also, the designer was very careless and made huge mistakes that cost the lives of massive amounts of people. One of these mistakes was not putting enough life jackets and life boast to accommodate the massive amount of passengers. Even if people said the ship was "unsinkable" you should always be ready for a emergency and obviously the designers, captain and crew were cocky people who did not care about the safety of the passengers they were carrying on the voyage. I know that before any ships carrying passengers have to have a safety check before they get the okay to sail off. If this did happen the safety people were horrible checkers, because it is there job to make sure that in case of an emergency, they have the right and enough of the equipment in case of an emergency.

I have always thought that the Titanic was interesting. It might have been that the captain may have tried to sink the boat, like Chloe said. They had to know that most of the people on the boat would die if there was an accident. I agree with Alex that you always have to be prepared for an emergency no matter how well something is designed. (probably not well in this case)

I agree with Chloe, but kind of don't because long time ago, the ships wouldn't have any monitoring thing that would tell them if there is something coming near. I watched the movie, and in the movie, there were two people on the lookout for any objects coming near, but they were not doing their job properly that they told the people who were driving the ship too late, so it hit the iceberg. BUT... I don't know why the captain went full speed into an ice field. Maybe because he wanted to arrive faster because a hull was damaged. I'm not that sure.

Sofia said...

Maybe the captain wanted to go faster when the hull was damaged because he could have thought that the hull might break more for some reason and just stop. SO... he might have thought that the ship would suddenly stop, so he wanted to get to the shore as fast as he could.

I think there is a good chance that the captain made it sink, but I don't really know. Some of the things about how it hit the iceberg may have been exaggerated by news reporters to make the story sound more dramatic than it actually was.

What happened was that one of the shipmates wanted the captain to move the ship faster and when they finally saw the iceberg there was no way at their speed they could avoid it. But it could of been much worse. If they hadn't seen it there could of been a head-on collision between the ship and the ice. The ship would have sank faster and there wouldn't be enough time to get on a life boat. The captain wasn't smart because he wanted to break in the motors but he listened to one of his mates and made it go faster. When they realized the ship was sinking they decided to have children and women go on first which I find unfair because if you had a husband you wouldn't want to not know where they were. When the boat was sinking many of the men lied to their wives and children. They said that they would see them in a little bit or they would catch another boat for the dads. Many people gambled their tickets on the titanic. Lucky them! Imagine.

The designer really was stupid wasn't he. So were the people loading the boats, because they let the boats go with only half or a third of all the people the boats could hold. Therefore, in their rush to save people they just killed more. About the captain trying to sink his ship by going full speed into an ice field, maybe the Titanic's publicity managers didn't want to lose publicity by letting the public know that they made bad ships so they forced the captain to go, with the broken motor.

Sofia said...

I agree with Gillian that the crew members tried to save people, but didn't do it the right was that they just killed more people. I think it was really weird that they weren't trained to put people in boats the right way.

I think a lot of the people that went on the boat didn't actually look at how it was structured and it's poor design. All they looked at was how nice the boat looked, and how great of a cruise it would be. The people that were smart enough to look at its structure and figure out that it was going to sink were the ones that survived by selling their tickets or not buying any at all.

I agree with Ava S. The people didn't realize that the ship wasn't made well. They only looked at the luxury of the ship, because it was so amazing, it drew them away from looking at everything else. I also agree with Chloe, that the captain tried to sink the sip, but I can't think why. ._. I used to think I knew a lot about the titanic, but I really didn't until I read this article.

These videos were very imformative. I learned that if people on the Titanic knew about the iceberg 500 feet before, they could have saved the ship. To find out how the Titanic looked, forensic sceince was used: First, you had to take detailed forensic photographic examination of the wreck site. To plot all the positions, hundreds of hours of video tape. In a couple of years, I bet that we will have robots with minds of their own to do all this work for us. This story is very sad because of all the people who had lost their life and that there were a lot of ways to save the ship.
