Post-9/11 Technology Brings Exoskeletons, Laser Cannons to 21st-Century U.S. Military

By Nicholas Song

21ST-CENTURY SOLDIER: Lockheed Martin's Human Universal Load Carrier, (HULC, seen here with an upper-body Lift Assist Device) is a lower-body, electrohydraulically powered exoskeleton designed to lift and carry heavy loads. Lift Assist, mounted on the back of the HULC exoskeleton, enables the wearer to lift up to about 70 kilograms.

The 2 billion dollars spent on new research only shows the ignorance of the American government. There is point in making new weapons for a war that is already over and has only decreased in importance. Around the time of 9-11 the taliban was a government being recognized by other countries. That year, the taliban became only a shadow of the threat they used to be. When the US invaded and turned the taliban into a minor insurgency. Al-Qaeda is also a much smaller issue. It lost key leaders like Osama Bin Laden and even their famous communicator, Anwar Al-awlaki who had spread the message of Jihad which is a holy war undertaken by muslims against unbelievers. Without people Anwar Al-Awlaki who is said have recruited Nidal Hassan who was responsible for the fort hood shootings. The war on terror doesn't just cost the U.S. tons of money as shown in the article but also our freedom. As said before Anwar Al-awlaki was killed was killed by the United States when he actually did nothing wrong according to the first amendment, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise there of; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” But then United States government explains that since he wasn't on U.S. soil, he could be killed for spread anti-american messages which he was. The Anwar Al-Awlaki situation was also against the Fifth Amendment, which prohibits being rid of life without due process. The knowledge of death of some activists like Anwar Al-Awlaki weren't publicized which goes against the freedom of information act. This shows that war takes priority over our rights which is unfair so we should not delve into it. Not only will going to far into war overpower laws but it has made new yet bad laws like the patriot act. To summarize, islamic activist groups aren't that big of a concern anymore so we shouldn't sacrifice our money or our freedom to stop it.

This article reassures me. This is because we have spent 1.3 trillion dollars to keep America safe. At the same time this article tells me that we are using up a lot of money and puts us into more debts.
