Hong Kong Shoebox Apartments - You Tube Clip

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-iFJ3ncIDo

Growing up in Hong Kong, space was a luxury Gary Chang didn't have. Instead, to him, luxury meant the highest efficiency living while being able to share the corridor he considered his "room" with his four other family members and a tenant. So, we guess it should be no surprise that when he grew up to become an architect, he would create an astounding 344 square feet apartment capable of changing into 24 different rooms, all via sliding panels and walls.

I think this is incredible! The whole apartment is only 344 square feet and he has 24 rooms! He was very resourceful and his "spa" converted into a guest bedroom! He even has a home theater. Every room opens up to another so he can have more rooms. I think this story was great.

I so agree with Alex! This is incredible! The idea of having sliding walls so he can have for privacy is like awesome! I would never ever think of something that cool! Really!

This story was really cool. I definetly agree with Alex. I can't believe he has a very small apartment, but he can fit 24 rooms into it! Like Camille said, I think the ideas of a sliding walls are awesome, and they can be used for 2 things: privacy and more space. I would have never thought of that before.

I never would have thought that what he did would be possible. How creative that was. He took a little space and has so many rooms in one!

Wow that was amazing. One time when I was younger I thought of doing that but then I realized I was too young. However, when I was young I would always make stuff like that with pillows and then the previous thing would become something else etc., etc. He could probably have a party in there but he would have to make some changes...

Wow! That is so cool. As Alex G. said, his house is pretty small, but he can still fit 24 rooms. This is like a new step for mankind. Think of all the things we can do with only one invention. The world can store things easier in smaller place which also means less money to spend on bigger houses.

WOW!!! That is totally awesome! It's so cool that he designed it himself. I can't believe he renovated it four times. I bet he just kept coming out with new ideas and wanted to add them in. It's like the series of iPhones, they keep coming out with new features. I mean, the fact that the wall behind his "spa" can fold out into a guest bedroom is pretty impressive, so he must be like one of the top architects. Although I thought this was super cool, I am not quite sure how it relates to science.

This is so cool! I never knew that an apartment room can have all of those things in small space! In this apartment, he moves the walls apart, kind of like that, and then there's another room, and another! He's very smart to do this. I would have never thought of that! Just like what Emory said, you wouldn't have to spend more and more money to buy houses. You can just buy an apartment and get sliding walls. Although it has nothing to do with this, the outside of the apartment looks ugly, but the inside is so neat and cool.

That is so amazing! He has really learned to adapt to his living space. I can't believe he has been able to fit 24 rooms in that small amount of space. He was able to fit a master bedroom AND a guest bedroom. He was even able to fit a bar! I would like to visit his house and see this amazing piece of engineering.

Amazing! Most houses don't have all the luxuries that he has in his house and he fits it all into 344 sq. feet! In order to have 24 rooms in that small of a space, he must be pretty bright. I liked how he could just slide one wall and have books, another and he would have like a bathtub or something. Like Alex said, every room opens up to another, so he can have more and more rooms. I wonder what it would be like to live in that house. Another thing is that the apartment looked so modern compared to all the other buildings. I have been to Hong Kong, but I never heard of this before. All in all, this article was incredible and it would be fun to live there.

Wow that is amazing! I never imagined that you could have 24 rooms that all fit into one tiny shoebox apartment! I wonder if the different components slide or roll efficiently all the time or if he has to take care of them. I also wonder if he makes other apartments like that for other tenants, or if that apartment is one of a kind.

Amazing but this only goes to show China's budget. It is reluctant to fail at getting a lead United States. While people were suffering because of little space, their budget is spent on the rich as is usual for people in a government type that could easily be corrupt. In a communism the government has most of the power. This is an unfair thing that the United Nations should be aware too since one of the things that show a developing country is health care and state of population. On a personal notes, China keeps trying take over the United State's power in the world which seems normal though China used to be an ally of the soviets. (just an opinion)

That is co cool! I also agree with Alex and Camille that this in incredible! It's like he can make one room into 10 other rooms, all functioning just like they would in a real house.

It is amazing how Gary Chang can turn one small room into 24 smaller rooms, and there's even a flat-screen T.V. in there! Imagine if he had a five-room apartment!

I think this is so cool! I think this is a very smart idea. I am not sure I would want to live in a house this small, but for him to fit 24 rooms into this house is so amazing. When I was watching the video I was so surprised because he just kept pulling out more rooms and more rooms.

It's pretty amazing how this guy can make 24 rooms out 344 square feet. Imagine how many rooms he could have if he used the same trick on a larger house.

That is so creative what he did. Even though his apartment is tiny, he managed to have everything he needs in it. It is one of the coolest homes I have ever seen. He didn't just say oh well my home is too small. He did something with his apartment and made it awesome. It is a great Idea, and 24 rooms is a lot of rooms for a house that is much bigger than what he has. He must be a really good architect. It must be weird sliding walls when you want to go to a different room. He also didn't just do sliding walls. He also did things with unfolding things, and really neat usages of space like when he unfolded the bed onto the bathroom. There are so many creative things that he did with his home, and now he has rooms that some people don't have. If you think your house is too small or boring then you can do something creative with it like what he did. Imagine how many rooms you could have if you had a house that was even a little bit bigger than his. You could have sooooo many rooms.

This is amazing! He keeps a kitchen right behind his flat screen tv, and he has a guest bed with a bathroom. It is so cool how he can fit twenty-four rooms into that tiny space. He even has all the fancy stuff like a "spa" and a bar. I wonder how much it costed to make all those sliding walls.

This is so amazing! The only problems I found in this idea, is that if he got home really late from something, he might just want to go to his bedroom without going through all of the walls. Other than that, I think that the idea is pretty smart! I think that the reason he came up with that idea was because he said that his earlier apartment in Hong Kong with his family was pretty squished, and he wanted to change that for future tenants. I think it was amazing that he also had a home theatre, as Alex said! To think that he could fit a large TV into his assortment of walls and rooms, is incredible! I thought this video was very fascinating, and I think that it owuld be cool to have that in more homes.

Hong Kong is extremely crowded with a population of 7 million people. The architect found a great solution to this problem. He turned a six-bedroom apartment into twenty-four different rooms without increasing the size of the apartment. He grew up in the same apartment with six other people, and it was very crowded. Now he lives alone, and he realized that he performs only one task at a time. He doesn’t have to move around a lot since the place changes for him. This video makes me think about how much space we really need to live in. In a crowded city, you have to think of new ways to use the space you already have. It’s a big challenge.

I loved this video because the man was smart and decided that instead of getting a new apartment, he renovated with secret compartments and sliding walls. It allows multiple functioning rooms in the 344 square feet space. It is incredible how he can fit a guest bedroom, a bathroom, a spa, a master bedroom, a hammock, a kitchen, a library, and a living room into the apartment. It is also amazing how he can wait for an entire wall to move when he really has to go pee. He is a very creative and innovative architect, because he is maximizing the use of his space. He can not get a bigger apartment because Hong Kong has a huge population and limited living space. This is the best solution to his problem.

I think that this guy was a really good architect, but wouldn't it seem a little cramped in there? Even if there were so many rooms, the rooms were still pretty small. Imagine what he could do with a bigger house! What is you could make something small into something big. For example, unfolding one room into many rooms each the size of that one room! That would be pretty cool.

I think this is just amazing. 24 rooms in a 344 square foot apartment. The sliding walls are very cool because they provide a lot more space. In an area where there would normally only be one room, he can fit two. If more people could do this it could be really helpful for a lot of people who don't have much space.
