I can't believe it! I watch Spongebob all the time! But they're right! I get clouded a lot.

I've always heard about the "TV rots our brain" phrase, but I never believed it was actually true. I never would of thought that cartoons would cloud your brain, and it was especially interesting that only certain cartoons cloud your brain. It will be interesting to see how NIckelodeon reacts to this problem.

I learned a lot from this article. I never thought Spongebob could cloud people's mind. I thought it was interesting how kids a while back used to start watching TV at four and now four months. I also was surprised how fast-paced Spongebob is.

Sergio said...

I thought that watching something that kept changing would make you more concentrated. I guess I'm wrong. Did the kids watch anything on the television or colored early before the experiment? In response to Jameson: Could the people that took the test have watched a regular show before; completely taking away the purpose of the test's chance to be correct.

Don't get worried because Spongebob was tested on 4 year old kids, and on the news, Nickelodeon said that Spongebob was supposed to be for ages 6-11. There's a possibility that they just said that so kids 6-11 wouldn't stop watching Spongebob. Also, if you have younger siblings who watch Spongebob, I would probably tell them not to watch too much, or their brain might dull.

Wow! I honestly love Spongebob, and the mindlessness of it, but I kind of understand what they are saying. All of the changing pictures would distract someone. Also, if someone particularly enjoyed it, they could still be reminded of it while taking the tests. That would throw them off task.

I've heard of this Tv clouding kids thing before but I never believed it. Now that I'm thinking about it, I think one of my friends has this problem except he watches "Cartoon Network" or whatever its called. When I was younger I used to watch Spongebob and I remember when him and patrick use their imagination to have fun in a box and Spongebob made a little rainbow and said, "Imaginaaattttiiiooonnnn" That might make kids more creative and use their imaginaaaaatttiiooonnnsss more often... And Jameson, i'd also like to see how Nickelodeon reacts to this as well... Oh no. Now I'm thinking more about it it and I don't want little kids running around pretending to fight robot pirates!

Do you guys think that if they made the show more educational, it would help people be more on task.
I watch like 20 fast-paced TV shows an year and I'm not clouded?
Colin, what do robot pirates have to do with this blog?

It's interesting that they say it's the type of tv that you watch, not that you watch it, contradicting the normal saying that tv rots your brain, which may after all be true. I think that that is very important if it effects your self control! That is a very important skill, and if it is being hurt at four years old, then that is a bad sign. It's sad, because Spongebob is such a popular show, and so many kids watch it! I've never heard of that other show, but maybe thats just me. Also, I'm wondering if the age of the person who watches it matters! Four year old brains are different than our brains. Also, it is interesting that watching a cartoon gets the same affects as coloring! Although they would have to test it a bit more to see if it got all the same results.

I learned a lot from this article. I knew TV dulls your brain and I believed it but I never really thought in depth about it until now. We have more self control then 4 year olds, and I think people can watch the show in moderation. Nickelodeon's reaction to this will be pretty funny...

I think that this was a great and interesting study that these scientists had. I was wondering why they chose SpongeBob SquarePants as the specific cartoon that clouds your brain. I thought that maybe they should have done a few other experiments with different random popular cartoons that kids watch. I was also wondering how old the children they experimented on were and what kind of tasks of concentration the scientists gave them. Occasionally I watch SpongeBob SquarePants because my brother is watching it. When my dad tries to talk to us while we are watching a TV show like that, he always tells us that we always sort of go into a zone in "TV Land." ;]

Caroline said...

I agree with you Edie, they should have done different test on different shows. Who would have thought that the pace of a show could make a difference in clouding your brain.

I've heard that Spongebob can cloud people's brain but only people 6 and up are supposed to watch it because if any kids lower than the tv show will cloud their brain because they haven't learned anything and then they will do whatever he does.

Colin said...

Sergio, I think it was one of the episodes I saw when I was younger...

This is a very interesting post. I used to watch Spongebob every day, when I stopped it didn't make a difference. That could mean my brain was distorted and clouded from the start, or it only has an effect on some kids.

I had some idea about the don't watch to much TV thing, but I never really believed it because there was nothing to back it up. While I was reading this I was wondering what the effects would be of a regular television show.

I believed that TV rots your brain, but I though it was the staring at a screen part that affected it. I never would have thought that it was the TV show that you watched that affected your brain. I think it's interesting that too much TV at a young age can affect social development. I can see though, how people watch TV more today, as technology has evolved.

I think that this article is interesting, but I think that they needed a control and they should have had a group of kids doing nothing. I also think that they should have tested on a variety of different aged kids, instead of only four year olds. And why did they have the kids coloring or watching TV for nine minutes? I'm not sure if it really matters, but it seems kind of unusual. Why not use a nice round number, like ten?

This article is very interesting. Just like some other people, I believe that TV rots your brain, but I never thought that Spongebob could cloud your mind.

This article was very interesting. Just like some other people, I think that TV rots your brain, but I never thought that Spongebob could cloud our minds.

This article is interesting, but it might be incorrect. I watch Spongebob, actually since I was 3, and I don't lose my concentration after watching it, much less any show.

I think this article was very interesting. I was always told that television rots your brain, but I didn't really think about it. I always knew it was true, but I didn't believe it could actually make you less smart at the moment, I always thought that when you are like 100 it would start to take affect. I never knew that Spongebob could cloud peoples minds. I think it's really interesting how the fast paced shows will cloud your brain a lot more then the slower shows. The part about how people used to start watching television at the age of four and now they start at about the age of four months really makes you think about how much everything/everyone has changed with all of our electronic devices. At least that's what it made me think about. Overall, I thought it was a really good article.

Every time my mom or dad said to turn off the television and play outside, I thought it was some grown-up thing, like everyone is mortally afraid of Asbestos. (Well fine, that actually is logical) but I never realized it actually affected your brains. When Marcus was young he loved watching Caillou and Sesame Street, so I think I was less exposed to it, but now I don't watch T.V. so often.

I really can't watch Spongebob but anyways I prefer more action and suspense in my movies and tv shows and I like Tom and Jerry much more!!!! The reason I like them so much more is because there is more action and suspense, the scene change is silghtly slower and it is about 3X as funny!!!!!!!!!!!!

Luca said...

Alex M. If anything I think Tom and Jerry is more fast-paced than Spongebob. Because there is always that time when the dog is chasing Tom the cat, and when Tom is trying to chase Jerry the mouse, while jerry comes up with some plan to escape using a tin can, a blowtorch, and a can of Ammonia.

Jacob said...

I also believe that Spongebob can cloud peoples brain if you watch it to much to.

I always realized television was not the best but I never knew it could have such an affect on your brain. It is even a little scary.

I always hear my parents say, "Get off the TV, it rots your brain!" but I never thought that was true. I still am not completely convinced, but I think it might be true. I found it a sad reflection that in the 1970's kids started watching TV at age four, and now the average age is four months. Channels like Nick and Cartoon Network may respond to this problem by making their shows a little less fast-paced.

One of my baby cousins is two and he watches Spongebob almost every day. I should warn my aunt that it might dull his brain.

P. S. His name is Gavin and he's really cute.

I wonder what would happen if a show was fast paced for 5 minutes then was slow paced for 5 minutes, and the show ended with it being slow paced. Would the fast pace wear off, or would it stay for as long as it normally does after the show is over because the child's mind recognizes that show as a fat paced show?

Jordan said...

I would like to point out that it is not the show spongebob that is causing the cloudy heads, it is the extremley random and loud things in the show that are the problem. It can make your mind go blank and you will make wrong descisions. There are probabbly 50 other shows out there that are more effective to the brain that spongebob. However, I do not understand why this would be directed at us. The scientists did tests on 4 year olds, and as far as I know, our brains our much more developed than theirs.

I have had some experience with this problem. It is really hard to think straight when I'm doing homework in front of the TV.

I can't believe that spongebob clouds your brain. I have been watching sponge bob since I was three years old. Not so much any more but, I guess thats good now. Sometimes when I was really little and I was watching Spongebob and for the next five minutes I couldn't think straight

t.v is absolutely terrible for the brain. You could get brain tumor or extremely bad migranes.

T.V might be fun but in but it can also be deadly indeed.

I think this study is probably right because I know I've gotten clouded before. Except I don't watch very fast paced shows, I watch medium things like The Simpsons, Family Guy and other things like that. However I listen to fast paced rap music, and sometimes I'll get a little clouded after that. So I don't think it's just television, also music, fast talking and anything moving very fast.

Max said...

This study doesn't apply to me because I mostly watch nature documentaries and listen to classical music. But I still find it interesting that fast paced TV show can affect your brain.

That is really scary. Kids watch Spongebob so much but it isn't good for you. I wish that kids would watch something educational instead of fiction that isn't important at all. Maybe someday they will...
